September 10 , 2005 - The Elevens - Northampton, MA - Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund Raiser - Henning Alone Show - with: The Aloha Steamtrain Reunion and a zillion other bands.

Henning says: Phew. Saturday, man, what a day. I began by riding up Rt. 9 with Brian. We were heading to Williamsburg to begin recording the new Mike Flood album. It was a warm, sunny, grasshopper-filled morning.

The recording session was excellent. The prestine studio was perfectly suited to promoting creativity. The air was relaxed and casual. I entered the musically-focused state-of-mind that sometimes wonderfully accompanies such concentrated moments of learning and creating.

Later, at The Elevens as I was performing a very satisfying solo set, that state-of-mind stayed with me. Things were focused on musicality not showmanship so much. Beyond that, as well, while I watched and listened to fellow performers at this Hurrican Relief Benefit, I felt myself really tuned in to the music, the rhythms, the ringing of the overtones.

Late in the night, when the Aloha Steamtrain stepped on stage and proceeded to play what may have been our worst musical performance ever, I still managed to keep this focus in my head, as I caught snippets of Ken's lush mellotron string chords and Brian's smooth herky-jerky drum fills.

I knew the music we were performing was weak and bubbling over with wrong-notes and missed verses, but the audience, who were mere sillouettes against the lights of the distant bar bottles, were swaying and jumping and bobbing. People have been waiting for a chance to get up out of their chairs, I think, and they were eagerly eating up the moment, even if the main course wasn't quite thouroughly cooked.

After the Steamtrain's set, after seven consectutive hours at The Elevens, Scott Hall brought everything back home with a rendition of Randy Newmans' "Louisianna 1927". He was kind enough to allow Brian, Ken, and me to play along with him.

After we had left the stage, a slightly inebriated but solumn young man approached me and said that the last song meant a lot to him especially since he was shipping out the next morning to head down to the flood zone to provide assistance. I thanked him and packed up so I could go home and sleep off the day in my warm, dry bed.

Reports have come in that The Elevens raised quite a bit of money on Saturday night thanks to the generosity of all those that attended and of the bar itself. Well done.
