June 17, 2004 - The Iron Horse - Northampton, MA - with: The Bourgeois Heroes and The Winterpills

Henning Says: I had a great time last night at the Iron Horse. Thank you to everyone who came out and to everyone who told their friends to come and to everyone who brought along friends. The crowd was excellent. The Bourgeois Heroes and The Winterpills both put on incredible shows. Something about that stage just brings out the best in everyone. I think they made a lot of new fans.

I had a really, really fun show. We debuted "Save my Place" and "Map" to Northampton. Both sounded good. "Superhero", "Disgruntled Lover", "Back To School", "Journal of Lies" - we had six newish songs, a few oldies, "Soup of The Moment", "1,000 Times" - some Chain Cd songs, "Uncomfortable", "Omnivore" and songs from our upcoming album, "Photobooth Curtain", "Something's Taking Over". I loved playing the acoustic guitar. I'll have to remember that for future Iron Horse shows. In most clubs it's a safer bet to go with the electric since I have some control over the volume, but at the Iron Horse there are no worries. Jim did a great job with the sound.

That audience was super energetic and I looked over the Acivity Pages this morning briefly. Awesome, funny, impressive. (I share some same favorite movies with a lot of the people who came.) I think the record was broken for most Activity Pages completed at a gig, just check out the column on the right, there. Sheesh.

Brian Says: As I was leaving my apartment today I heard the next one over listening to "Fixing a Hole" and it struck me (coincidence or not), June 18 is either Paul Mccartney's birthday or the day Sgt. Pepper came out in 1967. I used to listen to it every year on that day--but it's been a little while since the last time, so I dunno.

As I was leaving last night to go to the Iron Horse, it suddenly struck me--in June of 1994, 10 years ago, a young Ken Maiuri and a young me played together live for the first time on the Iron Horse stage--it was an open mic, and after us, they banned electric bands. I think Ken has the tape--the band was Sourpuss and I think we did 3 songs, maybe 4. One of which I wrote (the music anyway--Todd the singer did all the words) that I don't remember the title of (he had crazy titles).

One of my only memories of that show was standing outside the Iron Horse with Todd and a guy asking us, "Yo, got any endo?". I had no idea what that meant. Todd and I said no and later giggled about it. Later I heard Madonna ask Dave Letterman during her unruly appearance on his show in '94 or '95, "Dave do you smoke endo?" People might assume that I'm hip, but I'm not really.

So last night's show was a blast. My brother Eric was there, from California. He'd never seen me play at a real show.

I think Max and I were not totally on because I convinced Max to do a shot of Cuervo with me. We were loose.

I'd write more but it's time to go home.
